What Is a Percent to Target Calculator?

A Percent to Target Calculator tells you how much a value needs to change, in percentage terms, to reach a target.

For example, if something currently costs $80 and your target is $100, the calculator can determine the percentage increase needed to reach that target.

How to Use It

Enter:

  • Current value
  • Target value

Then select Calculate.

The calculator compares the target with the current value and determines the required percentage change.

Formula

The standard percentage change toward a target is:

Percentage Change = ((Target − Current) ÷ Current) × 100

A positive result means the value needs to increase.

A negative result means the value would need to decrease.

Example

Current value: $80

Target value: $100

Change:

$100 − $80 = $20

Percentage change:

($20 ÷ $80) × 100 = 25%

So the target requires a 25% increase.

Where Can You Use It?

This calculation can be useful for:

  • Investment price targets
  • Sales targets
  • Business goals
  • Weight or performance goals
  • Budget planning
  • Price comparisons
  • Academic targets

Important Note for Investments

If you’re using the calculator for a stock or other investment, the percentage required to reach a target is simply a mathematical calculation. It does not indicate whether the target is likely to be reached.

FAQs

Can the result be negative?

Yes. A negative result means the target is below the current value.

Does this calculate annual return?

No. It calculates the percentage move from the current value to the target. It does not annualize the result.

Why is the current value used as the denominator?

Percentage change measures the difference relative to the starting value.
